Park's Accommodation
Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve
To navigate the Baviaanskloof, it is essential to understand that the reserve is effectively a long "corridor" between two main entry points. Depending on where you are coming from—the coast or the Karoo—your journey will begin at either the Eastern Gate or the Western Gate.

The Eastern Gate (Patensie Side)
The Eastern Gate is the most common entry for those traveling from Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) or Jeffreys Bay. Entering here immediately plunges you into the lush, dramatic scenery of the lower valley.
-
Best for: Accessing Poortjies, Bergplaas Hut, Doodsklip, and Rooihoek.
-
The Journey: From the Eastern Gate, you will navigate the spectacular Combrink’s Pass. Bergplaas is typically the first of the three you would reach, situated high on the plateau. As you descend back toward the valley floor and continue west, you will find the turn-offs for the riverside camps at Rooihoek and Doodsklip.

The Western Gate (Willowmore Side)
The Western Gate is the gateway for those traveling from the Karoo or the Garden Route (via Uniondale). This side of the reserve is generally drier and more open, showcasing the vast fynbos plains.
-
Best for: Visitors staying in the private farmlands of the western Baviaans or those doing a full "traverse" of the reserve from West to East.
-
The Journey: If you enter here, you will pass through the Nuwekloof Pass and the scenic Studtis area before reaching the administrative checkpoint at Geelhoutbos. From there, you still have a significant 4x2/4x4 journey ahead of you to reach Doodsklip, Rooihoek, and finally Bergplaas.

Booking Your Stay
Because the Baviaanskloof is a protected wilderness area managed by Eastern Cape Parks (ECP), bookings are strictly regulated to prevent overcrowding and to protect the environment.
-
Permits & Reservations: You cannot simply "show up" and camp. You must have a pre-booked permit and reservation, which can be arranged through the central ECP booking office or at the gatehouses if they have availability (though pre-booking is highly recommended during peak seasons).
-
Check-in: Even with a pre-booking, you must stop at either the Eastern Gate or the Western Gate to sign in, verify your 4x2/4x4 capability, and receive the latest updates on river levels and road conditions.
Pro Tip: If you are planning to traverse the entire reserve from one gate to the other, allow at least 6 to 8 hours of driving time, excluding stops. The terrain is demanding, and the speed limit is naturally "slow and steady."
